Alfresco is a creative exploration into reimagining a user-centered, futuristic but feasible, power tool system. Through listening to users' needs and studying market and technology trends, Alfresco was designed to simplify yard care for the suburban home owner. This solution was developed by concentrating on ease-of-use and price reduction to create this modular power tool system.
User and market research determined outdoor power tools today are often either bulky and hard to manage, or expensive. Alfresco solves these dilemmas with a modular system where the pricey and heavy components, being the motor and batteries, become a one-time purchase that can be attached to various tools, such as a chainsaw, hedge trimmer, or a leaf blower. The motor and batteries are housed on the user’s back, which shifts weight out of the user’s arms requiring less effort and allowing for greater control of the tool.
Alfresco is designed to be an expansion of the existing Dyson product lines into the home yard care market segment. The neutral-colored housing of the pack design was drawn from Dyson’s simple form language. The exposed form presents the motor and the use of color highlights its function, drawing the user's attention to the technology and power that drives the device. The tool design uses simple, intersecting shapes to reflect Dyson's “shrink-wrapped” language that mitigates superfluous form around nonessential components across their product line.
